Millions of people nowadays suffer from some kind of anxiety disorder all over the world. And the common question of anxiety patients is “Can it be stopped?”. The good news is, any anxiety disorder is treatable however, there is no assurance that a certain treatment would work on the disorder of the patient.  It is because there are several factors that can trigger the development of an anxiety disorder and for the treatment to be effective; it should directly treat the root cause of the disorder. In short, the kind of treatment to be done depends on the cause of the anxiety itself.

Anxiety disorder can be caused by genetics, brain chemistry, medical factors, and environmental factors such as life experiences or a combination of these. Proper management of anxiety makes the disorder to be easily treated and the first step to the treatment process is determining the factors. However, there are cases of anxiety patients where determining the possible causes of their anxiety disorders seem to be near impossible.

What makes anxiety very tiring, terrifying, frustrating and debilitating to have are the anxiety symptoms. Anxiety concentration makes its patients unable to concentrate and lose control of what they think, what they feel and their behavior towards certain objects, situations or events which are subjects of their fears and worries. Others do not even know what the subjects of their fears are; they just feel extreme fear out of the blue without apparent reasons.

Anxiety patients suffer from variety of physical and mental symptoms and the most common are muscle tensions, hypertension, heart palpitations, racing heartbeats, hyperventilation, trembling, stomach discomforts such as diarrhea and constipation, trembling, sweating, nausea, dizziness, headaches, backaches, restlessness, irritability, insomnia, dry mouth, hot flashes, lump in the throat and skin rashes. In worst cases, anxiety patients may feel intense fear that they might be going crazy. Others can even suffer from hallucinations, either visual or auditory or both. They can hardly distinguish the reality from their hallucinations resulting to detachment from the reality.

Because of different chemical makeup of every individual, people respond differently to a similar treatment; some may be cured easily, some may need to use other treatment. For this reason, this article aims to introduce to you briefly the different ways to treat anxiety which you can try.

  • The safest and cheapest way is the self-help. Other people tend to keep their problems and worries on themselves which can result to depression, stress and anxiety overtime. If you are one of them, better start spending quality time with your family members or friends; talk to someone you trust; share your thoughts and feelings. If still not comfortable, find a way to release your negative feelings for your mind and heart to be clearer. You can write it down; you can even dance or sing it out. Reading inspirational messages or listening to calming and soothing music also has calming effect.
  • Next thing is having a healthy lifestyle which means healthy diet, enough rest and regular exercise. Also, avoid stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, refined sugars and processed foods. These can trigger anxiety attacks.
  • There are also herbal medicines that are considered as an alternative for anti-anxiety medications. These include kava kava, valerian root, hops, passion flower, chamomile, catnip, skullcap, lemon balm, motherwort and Saint John’s wort.
  • Therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and exposure therapy are also effective in treating anxiety as these directly deal with the anxiety causes.
  • And the last line of defense would be the anxiety prescription drugs which include benzodiazepines, antidepressants and beta-blockers.

Combination of the above mentioned treatments is also possible. However, always remember to consult your doctor first before taking any herbs, medications or changing your diet.
